National reports, including the Infected Blood Inquiry (IBI), have also stressed the need for better data-sharing to improve transfusion safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our Aims<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PBMPC research database will bring together real-world NHS data to help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Understand who receives transfusions and whether they follow best practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify differences in transfusion care across hospitals and patient groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess whether PBM strategies improve patient outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improve efficiency in blood use and reduce waste.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure equal access to high-quality care across all patient groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How This Will Help<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By turning data into action, this research will support safer, more effective, and more sustainable blood management, benefiting both patients and the healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who We Are<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This work has been developed by the NIHR Blood &amp; Transplant Research Unit in Data Driven Transfusion Practice, a NIHR-funded research unit with over 40 researchers across multiple institutions and hospitals in England supported by the Regional Thames Valley and Surrey Secure Data Environment team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our unit brings together patients, the public, researchers, and multi-disciplinary clinicians with a shared goal: to improve transfusion care.
