Funding to assess the impact of digital sepsis monitoring system on saving lives and improving care<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers have been awarded over \u00a3800,000 from the NIHR to review the\nimpact of a digital alert system to monitor patients with sepsis at NHS hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sepsis,\nalso known as blood poisoning, is life threatening and accounts for an\nestimated 48,000 deaths in the UK each year.  If diagnosed early it can be\ntreated effectively with antibiotics but the difficulty lies in spotting sepsis\nbefore it develops, as symptoms are similar to other illnesses such as flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nteam will assess the effectiveness of a digital alert system across six UK NHS\ntrusts.  The system monitors a range of\nchanges in patients such as temperature, heart rate and glucose levels and\nalerts doctors and nurses if they fall outside safe parameters so they can\ninvestigate further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nstudy, funded by NIHR, builds on previous research<\/a> which showed that the\nintroduction of the digital sepsis alert system at Imperial College Healthcare\nNHS Trust in 2016 was associated with lower odds of death, shorter hospital\nstays and increased odds of receiving timely antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr C\u00e9ire Costelloe<\/a>, Director of the Global Digital Health\nunit and study lead said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIdentifying sepsis at an early stage\nin order to prevent death is a major focus for health systems across the world.\nThis funding will build on our previous research which showed that the\nintroduction of a digital alert system helped save lives and improve care at\nImperial College Healthcare NHS Trust hospitals. We look forward to\nworking closely with NHS clinicians to ensure that the introduction of\nalerts in UK NHS hospitals has the maximum impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Ron Daniels, Founder and Executive\nDirector of the UK Sepsis Trust, says \u201cThe key to improving outcomes for\npatients with sepsis is rooted in knowledge and communication. We are delighted\nto be supporting this important work, which has potential to revolutionise the\nway we detect and escalate care at the right time to the right clinical staff\nfor patients with sepsis, as well as building a deeper understanding of systems\ndesign. At a time when the World Health Organisation remind us that sepsis is\nresponsible for 1 in 5 deaths worldwide, this project has potential for global\napplication saving many thousands of lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research is led by the Global Digital Health unit<\/a> based in the School of Public Health at Imperial College London.  The team will collaborate with the Oxford University NHS trust, Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust, University College London, Reading and Berkshire NHS Trust, and the University of Cardiff, and is supported by the UK Sepsis trust<\/a> and the NIHR Health Informatics Collaborative<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
